Blended learning as a tool to renew art and design higher education

Abstract

The University of Art and Design in Helsinki has carried out several blended learning based courses and MA programs, which promote an international cooperation of teachers, experts and students in different degree programs and institutions. This will challenge us to rethink the ways of working and interaction as a part of relevant content in art and design education.

I will expound on some praxis-based models for collaborative course and module production and implementation, and illuminate our key experiences by means of the topics such as Lego tool method, Neutral space for a reform process and Social media and informal learning in art and design higher education.

It is evident that blended leaning emphasises on new alternative methods for learning and teaching, and reforms of curricula too, and interlinks both technology and social aspects with the process of building professional competences and identity of a student. In addition a collaborative course design and implementation can be an effective tool to reform the working culture and leadership of an educational institution.
