DeL Online March 2006: speakers: Richard Doust

How do colleges of art and design approach the task of preparing course authors and teaching staff for online provision?
A growing number of universities in the art and design sector are already offering, or planning to offer online courses. However, most online courses that already exist have been developed and are currently directed or by a small number of enthusiastic staff. There are very few opportunities or formal provision for staff development in online learning and teaching. Where should those new to developing online courses turn to learn the skills and expertise required to develop and teach on such courses?
This theme aims to open a dialogue between interested parties, bringing together those who already have experience in online course delivery and those contemplating this recent pedagogy. The aim is also to gather together a body of research and critical knowledge, theoretical and practical, and suggest strategies for our institutions to adopt for staff development in online course authorship and teaching, specifically in art and design practice.
The outcomes from these discussions should point the way forward and also generate ideas and examples of innovation in online teaching methodologies, delivery of courses and use of emerging technologies to achieve valuable learning experiences.
