Biography:
While recently being appointed as Lecturer in game Art and Animation at the University of Abertay, I first became involved in the Computer Games industry in 1984, providing artwork for Future Publishing while studying a Law degree at Dundee University.
After a further degree in Illustration and Design I joined the industry full time in 1993, and have since occupied roles across the entire spectrum of Game Art production - from Junior Artist to Art Director - for companies such as DMA Design, Visual Science, Rockstar, Electronic Arts, Vivendi, Sci and Psygnosis. As of date producing 22 published titles to date including work on Games series such as Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto (GTA), Medal of Honour, Formula One and Harry Potter.
I consider it of vital importance within my area of study to keep skills relevant and contemporary, and therefore I still work as a contractor for Computer Games companies, as well as being a founding member of a small games company.
My prime area of interest within teaching and academia concerns the pursuit of artistic excellence, tempered with professional working practices. It is a concern of mine that courses often centre on software rather than artistic ability, and as a result many students fail to appreciate that Game Art excellence concerns far more than mere technical competence. As such I have previously acted as an Industry mentor and Consultant for Dundee University, Gray’s School of Art and Vancouver Film School (where I still sit on the Advisory Board).
